📖 This guide explains exactly how NookMoon's phone number reading works — from the I Ching three-hexagram method to Five Elements energy fields to your wealth/career/love scores. If you've ever wondered "why does my phone number say anything about me?", this is the answer.
In Chinese classical philosophy, numbers are not arbitrary labels — they carry inherent energetic qualities. The I Ching (Yi Jing, 易经), one of the oldest texts in human history, maps numbers to natural phenomena through the Five Elements (Wu Xing: Metal, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth) and Eight Trigrams (Bagua).
Each digit 0-9 corresponds to a Five Elements attribute:
1, 6 → Water (流动、智慧、财富流动) | 2, 7 → Fire (热情、能见度、情感)
3, 8 → Wood (成长、行动力、事业扩展) | 4, 9 → Metal (精准、决断、财富积累)
5, 0 → Earth (稳定、根基、守成)
A phone number, from this perspective, is a unique sequence of elemental energies. The practice of reading phone numbers isn't fortune-telling in a fatalistic sense — it's pattern recognition using a 3,000-year-old framework for understanding energy relationships.
The most common phone number "reading" method just adds all digits together and takes the remainder when divided by 8 — giving only 8 possible outcomes. Two people with the same digit sum but completely different numbers get identical readings. That's not a reading, it's a category.
NookMoon uses the classical Three-Number Hexagram Method (三数起卦法) to produce 384 distinct base readings:
Upper Trigram = sum of front digits (area code / carrier prefix) mod 8
Lower Trigram = sum of rear digits (subscriber number) mod 8
Moving Line = sum of all digits mod 6
Upper + Lower trigrams combine into one of 64 hexagrams. The Moving Line position (1-6) indicates which developmental stage within that hexagram is active. Result: 64 × 6 = 384 distinct readings — numbers with the same digit sum but different positions now diverge.
The 64 hexagrams represent 64 fundamental energy states — each a specific combination of two trigrams (Heaven, Lake, Fire, Thunder, Wind, Water, Mountain, Earth). Some examples:
| Hexagram | Image | Core Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 水天需 Waiting (Nourishment) | Water over Heaven | Timing matters — strength is building, but forcing action now backfires. Patience is power. |
| 天水讼 Conflict | Heaven over Water | Tension with others likely. A period requiring careful communication; avoid disputes over money. |
| 地山谦 Modesty | Earth over Mountain | Quiet accumulation. Those who lead with humility now attract lasting influence. |
| 水火既济 After Completion | Water over Fire | A cycle is completing. Harvest is near, but vigilance prevents complacency. |
| 火水未济 Before Completion | Fire over Water | In transition. Things are unresolved, but movement is correct — keep going. |
The Moving Line (爻位) refines this: an early line (1st-2nd) suggests a situation is just beginning; a late line (5th-6th) suggests peak or resolution. A middle line (3rd-4th) marks a critical turning point.
Parallel to the hexagram layer, NookMoon analyzes adjacent digit pairs in your phone number using the Eight Mansions feng shui system (八宅法). Each consecutive pair maps to one of eight field types:
The most frequent field type in your number becomes your dominant field — the core energy signature of your number. Approximately 168 distinct field combinations exist, each with specific character traits and fortune tendencies.
Your Wealth, Career, and Love scores (0-100) combine both layers:
The algorithm is deterministic — the same number always produces the same scores.
